Whitespace
Trim leading and trailing spaces in a spreadsheet
A VLOOKUP fails because a name has a trailing space. A CSV export pads every cell. A paste from a web table leaves a line break’s cousin: ordinary spaces at the start or end of the text. Edge spaces on ordinary words can be trimmed; spaces in possible IDs, dates, numbers or email addresses are left for review. The words in the middle are not ours to rewrite.

What we trim — and what we leave
We trim edge spaces only on ordinary words, and leave sensitive columns such as IDs, codes, email addresses and dates untouched. Numbers, dates, and IDs are not recalculated. We do not change spaces between words, collapse double spaces inside a sentence, or rewrite non-breaking spaces as a special case you cannot review.
Excel’s TRIM() also squeezes extra spaces in the middle of a cell. That is sometimes what you want and sometimes a silent edit to an address or a product code. This tool does not do that.
- Leading and trailing whitespace on ordinary words, excluding protected values
- No collapsing of spaces between words
- No filling of blank cells and no formula edits
How to trim spaces in Excel or CSV online
Upload the file. Analysis is free. If any column has leading or trailing spaces on data rows, you will see a Whitespace fix listed with a column count — not a dump of the cell values.
Your file on disk is not changed during analysis. Cleaning is applied only if you later download a cleaned copy, and only for the safe fixes shown.
Why edge spaces show up in exports
CRMs, finance tools, and “download as CSV” buttons often pad fields. People type a space after a name. A formula that concatenated two columns left a gap that was then copied as values. None of that requires rewriting the meaning of the cell — only the empty edges.
If lookups still fail after a trim, the mismatch is probably in the middle of the text, a different spelling, or a second column. Those are review problems, not auto-fixes.
Formulas stay off-limits
If any worksheet contains formulas, we refuse automatic cleaning. Trimming a formula cell by converting it to its displayed text would freeze a calculation you may still need. Use a copy of the sheet, or paste values yourself, if you want that trade-off.
Questions
Will this remove extra spaces between words?
No. Only leading and trailing spaces on text cells are trimmed. Spaces in the middle of a value are left as they are.
Are numbers and dates changed?
We do not recalculate or reformat numbers and dates. Possible IDs, numeric text, dates, email addresses and formula-like strings keep their exact values, including edge spaces.
Do I need an account?
No. Analyse a CSV or Excel file without signing up. Files are processed temporarily and deleted within 24 hours.
