Duplicate rows

Remove duplicate rows from CSV or Excel

Exports get appended twice. A mail-merge list is pasted on top of itself. Two identical rows sit one after another and throw off a count. Fix My Spreadsheet finds exact duplicate rows in a CSV or Excel file and keeps the first copy.

What counts as a duplicate here

A row is a duplicate when every cell matches another data row, after eligible ordinary-text spaces are trimmed. The first time that row appears, it is kept. Later copies are listed for review. You must confirm they are unwanted copies before purchasing: identical rows can represent separate transactions.

That is a narrower rule than Excel’s “Remove Duplicates” when you tick only one column. We do not treat two people as the same because they share an email, and we do not fuzzy-match names. If two rows differ in any column — a date, a note, a second email — they are not duplicates.

  • Whole-row match after trimming eligible ordinary-text edges
  • The first occurrence is kept; later identical rows can be dropped
  • Rows that differ in any column are left as separate records

How to remove duplicate rows online

Upload a .csv or .xlsx file (up to 10 MB). Analysis is free and does not change your original file. If duplicate rows are found, they appear as a safe fix you can review before anything is rewritten.

The first row is treated as column headings. XLSX cleaning supports plain single-sheet tables starting at A1. Workbooks with formulas, additional sheets, rich text or reference features are reported for review instead of rewritten.

What we will not do

Some online deduplicators let you pick a key column and collapse every matching email to one row, keeping the first or last. That can be useful — and it can silently discard a different address, a newer comment, or a second order. We do not offer that mode.

We also do not merge similar rows, ignore case as a separate option, or guess that “Jon Smith” and “Jonathan Smith” are the same person. If you need that kind of match, do it yourself in a copy of the file.

A careful way to clean a list

If your goal is “one row per email”, this tool is the wrong first step. Filter or pivot in Excel, or split the job: trim spaces, remove empty rows, then decide identity in a spreadsheet you control.

If your goal is “stop counting the same exported row twice”, exact whole-row removal is the safe fix. Review the analysis, then download a cleaned file only if those fixes are the ones you want.

Questions

Do you remove duplicates by email or ID column?

No. Duplicates are exact whole-row matches after trimming leading and trailing spaces. Matching on a single column would drop rows that are not actually the same record.

Which copy of a duplicate row is kept?

The first occurrence in the sheet is kept. Later rows that match it exactly are the ones marked for removal.

Does this work on Excel as well as CSV?

Yes. Upload .csv or .xlsx. We analyse the first worksheet and check workbook safety. Additional sheets and complex workbook features disable automatic cleaning. Files with formulas are not auto-cleaned.
